Litigation Support. Forensic Expert for evaluation of hydrocarbon contamination at Occidental Petroleum Co. service stations (Southland v. OXY USA). Presented expert report and provided an expert opinion on determination of time of gasoline release. Expert Witness in Consolidated Electric Distributors et al. v. J.Hebdon, et al. Drafted expert report and was deposed on identification of LIX 84 copper chelating agent in soil and water samples from the site in Southern California.
Petroleum Refinery. Project Manager for the environmental forensic investigation at a petroleum refinery site in California. The project involved analysis and data evaluation for hundreds of soil, water, and free phase hydrocarbon samples to determine the product-type, and sources of subsurface contamination. The conclusions reached were later used successfully in litigation which resulted in the liability allocation among responsible parties.
Bulk Storage Facility. Project Manager for the ground water contamination hydrocarbon-fingerprinting project at a large bulk fuel storage facility. Activities included review and evaluation of historical chemistry data for gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel fuel releases. Evaluated weathered petroleum products using advanced chemical fingerprinting methodology and assisted in identification of the fuel-type and source-relationship among the samples throughout the site.
Diesel Fuel. Project Manager for a hydrocarbon fingerprinting study at a truck fueling facility. Evaluated analytical data utilizing source- and weathering-ratio approach that allowed differentiating between old historic contamination of the site and the on-going release of diesel fuel from a faulty pump.
Jet Fuel. Project Manager for a jet propulsion fuel contamination study at the US Air Force Base in Alaska. Utilized forensic geochemical methods to characterize jet fuel products at the hydrocarbon contaminated site. The evaluation of chemical composition and degree of weathering provided conclusive evidence that hydrocarbon plume at the site consisted of jet fuel products from different sources.
Fuel Supply Depot. Principal Investigator of a hydrocarbon contamination at the Department of Defense fuel supply facilities. These studies involved investigation of the nature and type of environmental impact at the facilities, evaluation of the sources and time of fuel releases and development of the allocation models. Each study also included investigation of extend and severity of groundwater contamination in the vicinity of the hydrocarbon fuel releases, leading to development of specific objectives and approaches for remediation activities.
Military Base. Project Manager for the hydrocarbon contamination investigation at the Army Base site in California. Examined historic documents and analytical data related to the nature and source of soil contamination. Based on the analyses of the site hydrology, chemical data, and historic industrial activities, concluded that the heavy hydrocarbon contamination at the site has existed prior to the base development.
Airport. Project Manager for a Jet A fuel contamination study at a major municipal airport in California. Utilized hydrocarbon fingerprinting methods to characterize the site contamination. Evaluated the data to conclusively link the products in the soils under multiple different airport facilities to the groundwater contamination.
Gasoline Contaminations. Project Manager for a gasoline contamination project where several potential sources of the ground water contamination were present. Utilized advanced chemical fingerprinting combined with stable carbon isotope ratio analysis to evaluate the source of the contamination.
Marketing Stations. Project Manager for numerous investigations of hydrocarbon fuel releases at commercial service stations. Designed forensic investigations, coordinated laboratory testing, evaluated and interpreted analytical data.
Natural Gas Condensate. Project Manager for the investigation of a major hydrocarbon contamination in the vicinity of natural gas pipeline and petroleum products storage facilities. Environmental geochemistry methodology was utilized to allocate the contamination as natural gas condensate and gasoline. Results of the investigation were used for assessing liability between the responsible parties.
Natural Gas Plant. Project Manager for the evaluation of chemical composition of liquid products at the natural gas processing plant and development of criteria to differentiate between condensate and refined petroleum products. Results of the analyses were used in the development of allocation models for use in cleanup disputes.
Manufactured Gas Plant. Lead contributor to a study conducted to allocate the sources of contamination in the urban river system from a former MGP and other local sources including petroleum storage areas. Utilized chemical analyses to delineate the extent of contamination and allocate liability among the responsible parties.
Sediment Contaminants. Project Scientist for assessment of the impact of MGP-related wastes to river sediments. Reviewed historic operations and chemical processes, designed an environmental sampling and analysis plan, and developed methods for analysis of specific chemical markers. Results of the analyses were used in the development of allocation models for use in cleanup disputes.
Superfund Support. Senior Scientist for a study to evaluate the sources of spilled hydrocarbon products at a Superfund site. Differentiated between the sources of the hydrocarbon contamination and evaluated residence time of petroleum products in the subsurface environment.
Method Development. Program Leader for development of analytical procedures for testing of various oxygenated blending agents in environmental samples. The method was accepted by California Environmental Protection Agency for the evaluation of gasoline contamination at service stations and storage facilities.
Technical Outreach. Project Manager of the Advanced Analytical Laboratory Technology Transfer project for Instituto Mexicano del Petroleo, a 2-year project designed to develop a modern and efficient environmental analytical laboratory at the company’s headquarter complex in Mexico City, Mexico. Provided consulting services on the design and equipment of the facility, trained the laboratory staff, developed a quality assurance system.
